13 Obligations of the Christian Life

The Christian Life
Colossians 3:1–17Colossians 3:1–17
English: King James Version (1611) — KJV

3 1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. affection: or, mind 3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. 5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 6 For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: 7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. 8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. 9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; 10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: 11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all. 12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; 13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. quarrel: or, complaint 14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Be Not Like a Hypocrite

Do Things In Secret Before the Lord

Matthew 6:1–18Matthew 6:1–18
English: King James Version (1611) — KJV

6 1 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. alms: or, righteousness of your: or, with your 2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. do not…: or, cause not a trumpet to be sounded 3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: 4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. 5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. 7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. 9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. 14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. 16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; 18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

WP-Bible plugin

How many people do you know boast what they give, or when they fast or when they pray?

These people are looking for their reward on earth but the Lord says greater is your reward in heaven when you do it in secret.  Each deed whether in alms, praying or fasting with right motive.

Alms

In verse 1 on alms (giving as an act of charity) — Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them; otherwise ye have no reward of your Father is in heaven.

In verse 2 — Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men…  They literally sounded trumpets under the pretext of calling the poor, though with no other design than to gratify self by giving in public.  They gave not in true humility (from the heart and compassion).

Giving your tithes, offerings, fasting secretly, etc. will always honor God.

When you pray

vs. 5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing i the syngagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men.  Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

Not only not just pray in secret but not in vain reputation, but pray with a humble heart.  Pray for God’s will on earth, seek it as Christ did, do it from the heart, live it and not be conformed to this world but be protected from temptation of the world.  In vs. 9–14 is a model of prayer from the heart.

When we fast

Scriptures reveal to fast secretly instead of openly, with a sad countenance but to do it unto the Lord with a humble heart with gladness and joy.

vs. 16–17 Moreover when ye fast, be not as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may seem unto men to fast.  Verily I say unto you, they have their reward.  But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; that thu appear not unto men to fast…

Why wash your face?  In the old testament, they would smear their faces with ashes.

To have blessings instead of curses, it is better to do these things in secret with a right and humble heart instead of wanting praise of men.   God is the one that truly rewards us and he looks at the heart of man.

Everyone is looking for Wholeness in their health and these articles to help those suffering from sickness and disease to find answers and recover themselves from the snares of the enemy.

Facing Your Giants

Have Enemies or Adversities that Seem So Big?

Numbers 13, verses 27–28:

 Spiritual Deliverance

And they told him, and said, We came unto the land where you sent us; and surely it flows with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.

28 However the people that dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified, [and] very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.

29 Amalek dwelleth in the land of the South: and the Hittite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, dwell in the hill-country; and the Canaanite dwelleth by the sea, and along by the side of the Jordan.

Moses sent 12 spies into Canaan to check out the land and report back. 10 saw adversity except for two, Joshua and Caleb, had a different perspective, as we see in verse 30:

And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.

verses 31–33:

But the men that went up with him said, We are not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we. 32 And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that eats up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of great stature. 33 And there we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come of the Nephilim: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.

Did the 10 spies see themselves as grasshoppers compared to the Canaanites?

Did the Canaanites see the Israelites as grasshoppers?

So why didn’t Joshua and Caleb agree with the conclusion of the other men?

What was the real issue?

The real issue was the faithfulness of God. God had been making extravagant promises to Abraham and his descendants.

I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great

Why did Caleb and Joshua give a different report? What did they see?

God’s promises had been consistently trustworthy: the land was good, and it was cultivated, and there were people already living there. God had previously said all those things. God had also said that HIS power would conquer the Canaanites. Caleb & Joshua saw God’s promises and believed them.

Let’s continue: Numbers 14, verses 6–9:

But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes; 7 and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: “The land we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land. If the LORD delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, ‘a land which flows with milk and honey.’ Only do not rebel against the LORD, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the LORD is with us. Do not fear them.”

Conclusion: God’s enemies may look tough initially, but they’ll melt away if we move in faith in obedience to the Lord. Just like adversity in life. What promises has God given you that you can stand regardless of your adversity?
