A spirit of Envy and Jealousy

Did you know envy and jealousy is a spirit that I call a green-eyed monster.  Why, because it gets your eyes off of God onto the world to what others have.  There is a spirit making you believe if you have this or that you will be happy.

The spirit of envy and jealousy works with conjunction with the spirit of rejection.  Some, who have a spirit of rejection, feel as though others being more blessed than you.   They look at everyone being blessed and feel as though God has rejected them.  Do you complain to God to why others are being blessed and not you?

Envy is the Greek “phthonos.” “It is the feeling of displeasure produced by witnessing or hearing of the advantage or prosperity of others.

It is further defined as: “having hatred or ill will; to look askance at, in upon; a feeling of discontent and ill will because of another’s advantages, possessions, etc.; resentful dislike of another who has something that one desires; desire for some advantage, quality, etc. that another has.

These spirits don’t work alone.  Even bitterness will attach to the spirit of envy and jealousy.  Example and Cain and Able in Genesis 4:5,6, 8

Abel’s sacrifice was pleasing, but Cain’s was not … Because, as we are told, Cain did not offer to God … was pleasing to God, being filled with jealousy, he killed Able.    Cain’s sin in reference to his brother was primarily jealousy culminating in hatred.  Hatred is a spirit of bitterness that can take you to actual murder or murder with the tongue.

One of the fruit (flesh) of envy and jealousy is murmur and complaining to God.  Didn’t the Israelites do this in the wilderness?  It will steal your peace and blessing.
A basic cause of murmuring is that too many of us seem to expect that life will flow ever smoothly, featuring an unbroken chain of green lights with empty parking places just in front of our destinations!  In its extremity, murmuring reflects not only the feelings of the discontented, but also the feelings of the very conflicted:
“Their sorrowing was … the sorrowing of the damned, because [they could not] take happiness in sin.

“And [yet] they did not come unto Jesus with broken hearts and contrite spirits, but they did curse God, and wish to die. Nevertheless they would struggle with the sword for their lives.” (Morm. 2:13–14.)

In His parable of the vineyard workers, Jesus noted of disciples how those who worked from the first hour, having “borne the burden and heat of the day,” murmured because they received the same wages as those who worked only the last hour. (See Matt. 20:11–12.) We beggars are so concerned with our entitlements.

Did you know that Envy and Jealousy causes osteoporosis.  Proverbs 14:30 “A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.”  It pulls the calcium right out of the bones.

Envy and Jealousy can close the womb for example Genesis 30:1 “And when Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die.” And Genesis 29:31 “When the Lord saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.

Do you see others promoted at work or in the church and you complain about them?  That is a spirit working in you.

Recognize the source of Envy and Jealousy:

  • Face your feelings and use them as indicators to change (James 3:14)
  • Recognize the source of these patterns (James 3:15-16)
  • Pray and learn to be content (Philippians 4:11) – be content in what you have or position and learn to rejoice with others who are rewarded.
  • Learn to love even your enemies (Matthew 5:44)
  • Change your focus to please Christ rather than on pleasing people and their desires by realizing your self-worth comes through Christ (Col. 2:9-10)

“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude.  It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful.”  (1 cor. 13:4-5)

If you feel blocked, something hindering you or oppressed, isn’t it time to remove the blocks?  How about stuck in the past of past failures, past sins that haunt you.  Come and learn how to deal with the past.  Learn exactly what Jesus did on the cross for you!
